Codes and Standards

Two new European standards for elevator cab design and manufacture will bring considerable benefits in terms of accessibility and safety for both passengers and service technicians.

The first, EN 81-20:2014, sets out revised and updated safety requirements for the construction and installation of elevators. The second, EN 81-50:2014, defines the test and examination requirements for certain lift components.

The new standards also clarify and improve the current building interface requirements. They replace the current EN 81-1 and EN 81-2 standards introduced in 1998, and all lifts taken into use after 29 November 2019 will be required to comply with the requirements of the new building standards.

The EN81-70 standard defines elevator car size and interior accessories that facilitate access for people using wheelchairs and walking aids. EN81-70 compliance is available for KONE EcoSpace, MonoSpace 500, MonoSpace 700, and MiniSpace elevators.

EN81-71 compliance is available to protect KONE MonoSpace 500 and KONE MonoSpace 700 elevators in buildings subject to vandalism. Vandal-resistant solutions include elevator materials and accessories that are durable, have limited flammability, and are water resistant.

EN81-72 compliant firefighter elevators feature trap doors and ladders for rescue operations. Electrical components in the elevator shaft and on the car are protected against splashing water. This smart building solution is available for KONE MonoSpace 500 and MonoSpace 700.
